James J. Spencer: Guitar, Vocals
It is very appropriate that James J. Spencer, better known to the world as J.J., is the first artist to be heard on the first ever Sly Records release. I say this because J.J. was not especially known for his musical talents, but for his world-renowned chess skills. In fact, I believe at the time he had only recorded two songs, “The Little Animals” and the equally genius and still unreleased “Chain Mail Girl.” He had this great guitar case that doubled as an amplifier, which I thought was awesome, and further goes to show the lo-fi ethos of the original Sly Records family. J.J. and I double dated for prom, which was indeed awesome.
